Providing access to new books for children in need across Canada

Learning to read is critical to a child’s success – both in school and in life. Literacy is one of the best predictors of a child’s future success. But a child without access to books won’t have the chance to become an engaged and capable reader. First Book Canada provides a resource essential to overcoming illiteracy, one that is missing for children from low-income families: access to an ongoing and diverse supply of high-quality books. In fact, in some of the lowest-income neighborhoods in the country, there is only one book available for every 300 children.

To date, First Book Canada has distributed more than 4.5 million books and educational resources to programs and schools serving children from low-income families throughout Canada at deeply reduced prices — and for free. You can read more about First Book Canada’s impact here.

As a sponsor of First Book Canada, TD funds The First Book Canada Marketplace —an online resource centre that offers brand new, high quality children’s and young adult books exclusively to schools and programs serving children in low-income communities.
